What Is CAEP Accreditation?

The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, or CAEP, was created in 2010. CAEP now oversees the development, implementation and outcomes of teacher preparation programs across the United States. This rigorous accreditation process requires institutions to follow established standards, giving students the assurance that they will receive a consistently high-quality education, and that the programs reflect current educational challenges and trends in meeting those challenges.


Students who enroll in a CAEP-accredited program can have confidence in the value and efficacy of their education. CAEP accreditation indicates that the university has been thoroughly vetted and rated for excellence and demonstrates continual growth and improvement. Accreditation commissions like CAEP are the seal of approval for an educational institution.


Ongoing Quality Control


According to CAEP, “Accreditation provides a framework that has pushed educator preparation programs to continually self-assess and conduct evidence-based analysis of their programs and their efficacy.” A school receives initial accreditation once they have demonstrated, through a self-study process, a formative review and a visit, they are able to “prepare new teachers to know their subjects, their students, and have the clinical training that allows them to enter the classroom ready to teach effectively.” CAEP continues to monitor how each teaching education program implements appropriate teaching standards and grants accreditation renewal only after a thorough review every seven to ten years. This gives educators the confidence that after graduation, they can enter into new educational positions competitively and have the tools to best help their students.


CAEP Standards


When developing institutional standards, the CAEP Commission on Standards and Performance Reporting focused on three factors that appear to have the strongest impact on student outcomes: content knowledge, field experience, and quality of teacher candidates.


From those foundational concepts, they built the following standards, approved by the CAEP Board of Directors in 2013:

  3. Candidate Quality, Recruitment and Selectivity
  4. Program Impact
  5. and Provider Quality Assurance and continuous Improvement
